Knowing how to calculate your GPA manually is a useful skill — even if you use our free GPA Calculator for everyday use. Understanding the formula helps you verify your results, spot errors, and plan your grades more effectively at Superior University Lahore.
What You Need Before You Start
To calculate your semester GPA manually, you need:
- A list of all subjects you took that semester
- The credit hours for each subject
- Your grade (or percentage) in each subject
- The Superior University grade point values for each grade
Step 1: Convert Your Grade to Grade Points
Use the Superior University 4.0 grading scale to convert each grade or percentage to grade points:
| Grade | Percentage | Grade Points |
|---|---|---|
| A | 85–100% | 4.0 |
| A− | 80–84% | 3.7 |
| B+ | 75–79% | 3.3 |
| B | 71–74% | 3.0 |
| B− | 68–70% | 2.7 |
| C+ | 64–67% | 2.3 |
| C | 61–63% | 2.0 |
| C− | 58–60% | 1.7 |
| D+ | 54–57% | 1.3 |
| D | 50–53% | 1.0 |
| F | 0–49% | 0.0 |
Step 2: Multiply Grade Points by Credit Hours
For each subject, multiply the grade point value by the number of credit hours. This gives you the quality points for that subject.
Quality Points = Grade Points × Credit Hours
Step 3: Add Up All Quality Points
Add together the quality points from all your subjects to get the total quality points for the semester.
Step 4: Add Up All Credit Hours
Add together the credit hours from all your subjects to get the total credit hours for the semester.
Step 5: Divide to Get Your GPA
GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours
Worked Example
Let us say you took five subjects this semester at Superior University:
| Subject | Credit Hours | Grade | Grade Points | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Programming Fundamentals | 3 | A | 4.0 | 12.0 |
| Calculus | 3 | B+ | 3.3 | 9.9 |
| English Communication | 2 | A− | 3.7 | 7.4 |
| Physics | 3 | B | 3.0 | 9.0 |
| Islamic Studies | 2 | A | 4.0 | 8.0 |
| Total | 13 | — | — | 46.3 |
GPA = 46.3 ÷ 13 = 3.56
This student achieved a semester GPA of 3.56 — which is in the high merit scholarship range at Superior University.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring credit hours: Never average grade points directly without weighting by credit hours — this will give the wrong result.
- Using percentages instead of grade points: Always convert your percentage to the official grade point value first.
- Forgetting failed subjects: An F grade still counts — with 0.0 grade points — and must be included in your GPA calculation.
